A Reflection from The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner’s Handbook
One of the most powerful things a clinician can offer is not certainty. It is curiosity.
Psychiatric practice constantly confronts us with behaviors, symptoms, and experiences that do not immediately make sense.
Why did this person stop taking a medication that seemed to be helping?
Why does someone repeatedly return to a situation that causes suffering?
Why does an intervention that works beautifully for one person fail for another?
It is easy to label what we do not understand.
Noncompliant.
Resistant.
Difficult.
Unmotivated.
However, labels can sometimes become the place where curiosity ends.
A more powerful question is: What makes this make sense?
That question changes the clinical encounter. It moves us from judgment to inquiry; from assumption to understanding; from reacting to discovering.
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner does not need to have every answer. However, we ought to remain deeply interested in the questions. For, what looks irrational from the outside may become understandable once we know enough of the story. And understanding often reveals possibilities that judgment could never see.
More to come.
