A Reflection from The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner’s Handbook
Sometimes the most important clinical question is not: “What is the diagnosis?” It is: “What does this person need from me right now?”
There are moments when the answer may be medication. Other moments call for assessment, education, structure, advocacy, coordination, or a higher level of care.
Sometimes the person needs something that can be easy to underestimate: our presence, the ability to remain attentive when someone is distressed, and to listen without rushing to fill the silence.
It is also the ability to tolerate uncertainty without pretending to know, and to communicate, through our words and our steadiness, that the person does not have to face this moment alone.
Presence does not replace knowledge. It allows knowledge to be used wisely. For, even the right intervention can fail when delivered without understanding, timing, trust, or connection.
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner brings more than a prescription pad into the room.
We bring ourselves, and how we show up may influence what becomes possible next.
More to come.
